I can officially say I’ve been using this classic sugar cookie recipe for a decade now. I began making these simple and sweet cookies on my first Christmas as a young bride, and here we are, ten years later, with several little hands helping us bake them. Grab some helpers and some cute Christmas cookie cutters and get to baking!
I like to pair this with a cream cheese frosting, but by all means use your personal favorite! I’ll post the recipe to the icing I like to use below.

Classic Christmas Sugar Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 cup softened butter
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
Instructions
- Cream together the softened butter and sugar. Once it's combined and creamy, add in the egg and fully incorporate it before adding in the vanilla.
- Mix together the dry ingredients, then add them to the butter and sugar mixture.
- Put in the fridge to chill for about 20 minutes while you preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Dust your work surface with a little flour and roll the dough out to about 1/4" thick, and use cookie cutters to cut out your shapes.
- On a parchment lined baking sheet bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown. Remove them from the oven to cook, and they will settle and firm up a bit. Allow to cool completely before decorating. Enjoy!
